The New York City Police Department is bringing a former military service dog on board.
Caesar, a 4-year-old German Shepherd who served three tours of duty overseas, will now patrol the subways with Officer Juan Rodriguez.
The Defense Department has made its retired dogs available to law enforcement agencies for years, but the NYPD has not had one before.
Police say military dogs can make good partners because they’re already used to working in stressful situations.
Bringing in a military dog also saves the NYPD the $ 6,000 to $ 8,000 it would cost to train an inexperienced dog.
