A 79-year-old woman was wounded by a stray bullet Monday afternoon.
A 79-YEAR-OLD woman was struck by a stray bullet in broad daylight Monday as she was strolling in the Bronx.
The elderly woman was walking through a courtyard between two buildings near the intersection of E. 153rd St. and River Ave. when she was wounded in the midsection around 3:45 p.m., sources said.
“I’ve known her for a while. She works, she’s a good person. I feel shocked,” said Juan Bello, 46, a former neighbor who says he knows the victim only as Clara. Her name was not released by police.
The victim — who was shot just blocks from Yankee Stadium — would occasionally take care of a handicapped child and find work preparing returns during tax season, said Bello who moved out of the neighborhood three months ago.
“I’ve known her for a while. She’s just struggling to get work. I can’t believe this happened to her,” said Bello, who has known the woman for 11 years.
Cops were searching for a possible suspect described by witnesses as wearing a gray hoodie when he fired the wild shot.
The shooter then sped off in an unknown direction in a silver Volkswagen SUV, sources said.
The victim was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition and is expected to survive, officials said.
Police were still searching for the gunman on Monday.
