MTA shows off anti-storm equipment

Gov. Cuomo and the MTA used the first anniversary of Hurricane Sandy to showcase techniques and equipment to combat the next superstorm in lower Manhattan — including a 30-foot tunnel plug and a subway-entrance cover.

The MTA, which demonstrated the plug for Cuomo at the South Ferry station, is considering using them in portals that connect train yards and tunnels.

A bright yellow flood-control cover also was unveiled Tuesday at Whitehall Street station. It can be rapidly installed at a subway staircase without any tools, and a source said that a contract was awarded to design them for at least 13 stairwells.

The governor also visited Ground Zero to view its post-Sandy progress.

The Port Authority has spent more than $ 100 million on repairing and fortifying the site — and will use the site’s security bollards as anchors for a removable flood-barrier system.
