The state attorney general is launching a probe into two luxury department stores in Manhattan over racial profiling claims.
Eric Schneiderman’s office sent letters to the CEOs of Macy’s and Barney’s asking for information related to their policies of stopping, detaining and questioning shoppers.
The letters follow lawsuits filed by two customers.
Barney’s CEO Mark Lee joined the Rev. Al Sharpton and other leaders at a press conference Tuesday at the National Action Network.
Lee apologized to both customers.
One is 19-year-old Trayvon Christian. The other is 21-year-old Kayla Philips.
In both cases, Barney’s allegedly told the shoppers that their credit cards were fake and detained them for questioning.
“Our preliminary investigation has concluded that in both of these instances, no one from Barney’s New York raised any issue with these purchases, no one from Barney’s brought them to the attention of our internal security, and no one from Barney’s reached out to external authorities,” Lee said.
Two similar cases were reported by customers at Macy’s.
In letter sent to both companies, the attorney general’s office says, in part, that the alleged repeated behavior by employees raises troubling questions.
