Ellis Island Reopens For First Time Since Sandy

It’s a big day for Ellis Island as the popular tourist spot is set to reopen nearly one year after it was flooded out by Hurricane Sandy.

The halls and buildings of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum are due to reopen to the public later this morning.

Sandy caused severe damage to the island’s buildings.

It swamped the boilers and electrical systems and left the island powerless for months.

“All the buildings on the south side of Ellis over here, they all flooded. The basement of the main building flooded and that’s where all our infrastructure is. That’s where our telephone systems, our HVAC systems, our electrical systems, everything is in the basement,” said Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Superintendent Dave Luchsinger.

Millions of documents, photos, and artifacts about the nation’s immigrant history survived the storm, but had to be moved for preservation purposes.

They will remain in storage while the island’s buildings are fixed and upgraded.

Liberty Island was also flooded during Sandy but reopened on July 4.
