NY Giants WR Hakeem Nicks is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at end of season.

The trading deadline came and went at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Hakeem Nicks is still with the Giants. Now they just hope that Nicks can turn back into the player he used to be.

“That’s what I think is going to drive him for the rest of the season,” said Giants receivers coach Kevin M. Gilbride. “I think you’re going to see the plays being made. And this is my true belief in my heart: that he’s getting closer and closer to erupting and making those huge plays that we’ve seen him make in the past.”

That would be a nice change for the 25-year-old Nicks, who has been somewhat of a disappointment this season. He has 34 catches for 521 yards and no touchdowns and at least six dropped passes. And for someone who used to be the Giants’ big-play receiver, he’s becoming more infamous for the plays he no longer seems able to make.

That’s one reason why many around the NFL thought the Giants might trade him, especially after their 0-6 start and considering that Nicks is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next March. But even though Giants GM Jerry Reese admitted teams called him about Nicks and added “We always leave our options open,” a team source said the Giants never seriously considered a deal.

That leaves them 10 more games and 133 more days with Nicks to get him back to being the player he was and possibly trying to re-sign him.

“I think when a guy as competitive as he is isn’t making the plays that he feels like he should be making, that is frustrating,” Gilbride said. “I don’t think it’s affecting him moving forward at all. In fact, it drives him to make sure that he makes the play next time.”
