4 Dead in Mount Vernon House Fire

Four people were killed early Tuesday when a fire swept through a two-story house in Westchester County, fire officials said.

The blaze, which started shortly after 3 a.m. at 11 South Bond Street in Mount Vernon, took several hours to bring under control, and three firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Three of the victims were found in the basement, behind a locked door, fire officials said.

“There was fire all around, fire out the rear; every entrance into the basement was covered with flames,” Mount Vernon’s deputy fire chief, John Batista, told the local NBC News affiliate. Firefighters, he said, “got close; they just couldn’t get the victims out.”

The cause of the fire remained under investigation and it was unclear if more than one family was living in the house.

The names and ages of the victims were not released.
