Council Vote Raises Tobacco Buying Age To 21

The City Council on Wednesday approved several anti-tobacco measures, including one that raises the age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21.

The legislation also targets electronic cigarettes.

Part of the bill would prohibit discounts on tobacco products and step up enforcement on vendors who sell, untaxed, cheaper cigarettes.

The City Council backed off another bill that would have made it illegal for retailers to display tobacco products behind the counter.

The proposal has small business owners worried about their bottom line, calling it unconstitutional.

New York now becomes the largest city to have an age limit of 21.

The city says the new age restrictions could possibly cut the smoking rate among 18 to 20 year olds by 55 percent.
