Volunteers Serve Homeless At Bowery Mission For Christmas

Volunteers around the city are spending time on Christmas to serve meals to the city’s homeless. At the Bowery Mission in Manhattan, which is open 365 days a year serving three meals a day, volunteers helped homeless get out of the cold and get a hot meal.

More than 200 people spent the night at the Bowery Mission to get in from the cold. Now, they will get three meals and clothes and stay inside where it’s warm.

Bowery Mission’s chef, Ping Lo, said the menu for Christmas includes homestyle macaroni and cheese, glazed ham, fresh vegetables, salad, bread and butter.

“It’s really important, I mean, it’s vital. Because like I said the temperatures are dropping rapidly like last night. People are coming in from the cold, they have no place to go,” Lo said.

James Macklin, director of outreach at Bowery Mission, said the mission has withstood the test of time, staying open for 134 years.

“We’re committed to being one of the most compassionate caregivers in the City of New York,” Macklin said.
