Thousands of people are hitting the streets for women’s health this weekend.
The 11th annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer New York got started in Midtown along the West Side Highway Saturday morning.
Pink-clad participants, including many who are breast cancer survivors, make their way from Pier 84 to Randall’s Island and back again over the next day and a half, with many camping out at a Wellness Village on Randall’s Island Saturday night.
Those walking the more than 39 miles say a cure is worth a little sweat.
“We’re focusing a lot on funding research for prevention, a way to prevent this disease from the start. And then also it goes to helping people get access to the breast cancer care they need regardless of their ability to pay for it,” said Avon Program Director Eloise Caggiano.
“People who don’t have cancer, they don’t think about how many years out of anything. But we’re always thinking ‘It’s year five, it’s year eight, it’s year 12, it’s year 20.’ It would be nice to get to a place where we don’t even have to discuss that. And that’s why I walk,” said Melissa Canady, a breast cancer survivor.
All walkers raise at least $ 1,800 for the Avon Foundation for Women, and organizers say the majority of that money will stay here in the city.
