Harry Belafonte wanted to auction the documents to raise money for King-supported charities.
Harry Belafonte sued the estate of Martin Luther King Jr. in Manhattan Federal Court Tuesday over three precious documents he tried to sell at auction.
The King of Calypso claims the late civil rights leader and his wife gave him the items because the two men were close friends. But when the 86-year-old crooner took steps to auction the documents in 2008 in an effort to raise money for King-supported charities, the estate blocked the sale and claimed ownership, the lawsuit says. A lawyer for the estate did not return a request for comment.

The items include an outline of a Vietnam War speech that King delivered in 1967; notes for an undelivered speech that King had in his suit pocket when he was assassinated in 1968, and a condolence letter from President Lyndon Johnson to widow Coretta Scott King.
