Cuomo Announces Program Aimed At Reducing Fuel Shortages During Emergencies

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a new program that aims to keep New York from experiencing fuel shortages like the one following Hurricane Sandy.

Motorists lined up for miles in the hopes of filling up cars and cans, eventually forcing the state to implement gas rationing.

In response, the governor’s office has created a Strategic Gasoline Reserve, the first of its kind in the nation.

The reserve will hold an estimated 3 million gallons of gas and will be used to fill supply gaps in the event of a severe storm or other emergency.

The fuel supply for the pilot program will be stored on Long Island but can be distributed to the city and other parts of the state as needed.
