Police are investigating after five people, including a 2-year-old, were wounded by a scissor-wielding man in Manhattan’s Riverside Park Tuesday morning.
Investigators say it began just before 8 a.m. near 63rd Street and Riverside Boulevard on the Upper West Side.
Police say the five victims were either slashed or stabbed by the emotionally disturbed man, identified as Julius Graham, 43, of Texas.
A female jogger in her 30s, who police say was the first victim, suffered the most serious injury after being stabbed in the back.
She was listed in critical condition but is expected to survive.
Graham then headed south, police say, stabbing a man walking a dog in the stomach and then a bit farther south, slashing another female jogger in the neck.
Police say he then moved southeast and slashed a 36-year-man with a stroller in the chest.
During the attack, police say the man’s 2-year-old son was slashed in the arm.
All were taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital.
Investigators say a bystander wrestled the suspect to the ground until officers arrived on scene.
Speaking to reporters at the scene he said, “I’m just doing my job. I just want to help people.”
Sanitation workers at a nearby depot also ran to the scene.
“I went and looked inside the cop car and a lady was in there, she was screaming. I told her to stay calm and that we were going to stay with her until she was okay,” said one worker.
A man who was sitting along the river says he saw the alleged stabber about an hour before the attacks, walking along the path. He praised the police for their quick response after the incidents.
“The baby getting in the police car, everybody getting into the police car, to the hospital. They don’t wait for the ambulance, they just put the people in the police car and zoom,” said the witness.
The suspect was taken into custody and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Bellevue Hospital.
Charges are pending.
