Hundreds Of LICH Employees Receive Layoff Notices

Employees of Long Island College Hospital are scrambling after hundreds received layoff notices.

A spokesman for the contested Cobble Hill medical facility put the total number of staff to receive notices at between 400 and 500.

A statement issued by a spokesman for the hospital’s operator, SUNY Downstate, says, “We are aligning our staffing levels to reflect the greatly reduced patient volume and limited services that are available at the facility.”

NY1 has reached out to the New York State Nurses Association and the union representing many of the hospital’s employees for comment.

Earlier this month, a judge’s decision stalled SUNY Downstate’s plan to shutter the facility, saying the state’s law governing the closure of hospitals was unconstitutional.

SUNY Downstate has repeatedly tried to close LICH, saying it is losing millions of dollars per month.

SUNY has said it is trying to find another health care provider to assume control of the hospital.
