Macy’s Herald Square Evacuated After Basement Fire

Macy’s Herald Square was evacuated Friday evening after a fire broke out in the basement.

The flames broke out at about 8:15 p.m. Friday.

According to the fire department, more than 100 firefighters responded.

Fire officials say it was out in less than an hour, thanks in part to the building’s sprinkler system.

A stretch of sidewalk on Seventh Avenue between 34th and 35th Streets had to be closed off on the west side of the store while crew battled the flames.

No one was injured.

Officials are working to determine the cause.
