More Charges Possible In Death Of Baby Found In Shopping Bag

The investigation continues with charges possible against two city teens after a baby was found dead Thursday in a shopping bag at a Manhattan store.

Police say security guards at the Victoria’s Secret in Herald Square stopped Tiona Rodriguez and Francis Estevez, both 17, for suspected shoplifting.

When the guards looked inside the girls’ bags, they smelled a strong odor and discovered the infant’s remains.

It’s still not clear how old the baby was or whether it was still alive when delivered.

Police say Rodriguez told them she miscarried on Wednesday and didn’t know what to do.

She is being treated at Bellevue Hospital.

Rodriguez lives in the Marcy Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where police combed her apartment for evidence Thursday night.

One of her neighbors tells NY1 he knew the teen was pregnant.

“She was trying to hide the whole pregnancy. She wore big clothes and all that. To find this out is a really big, complete shock because the girl is not a bad girl. She’s young. She doesn’t be out here in the projects. She goes to the store, to the school and back. She says hi. She’s not rowdy. She’s not loud. She doesn’t speak to anybody like that,” said one neighbor.

Rodriguez and Estevez are both charged with shoplifting and criminal possession of stolen property.

The medical examiner is working to determine the exact cause of death of the baby, which could lead to additional charges.
