Police arrested two bikers in connection with this weekend’s chase and apparent beating along the Henry Hudson Parkway, but meanwhile, the family of a biker injured in the incident says he may never walk again. NY1′s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.
Motorcyclist Edwin “Jay” Mieses suffered severe injuries when an SUV ran over him on the Henry Hudson Parkway over the weekend.
“I’m devastated. I’m devastated,” said Yolanda Santiago, Mieses’ mother. “All his ribs are so badly bruised that they say he’s still on the ventilator.”
Family members say he is in a coma.
Mieses, who’s from Massachusetts, has a wife and children.
His father, Edwin Mieses Sr., posted on Facebook.
“My son is out of surgery thank God now comes dealing with him not able to walk again,” Mieses Sr.’s post read. “However, I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”
Friends posted: “he’s the victim yet he and his group are being treated like they are the criminals.”
On the Henry Hudson Parkway Sunday, 20 to 30 motorcyclists surrounded the SUV. Police say they were hitting the vehicle with their helmets before the driver, Alexian Lien, with his wife and young daughter in the SUV, fled.
On Tuesday, police commissioner Ray Kelly talked about why Lien has not been charged.
“It depends on what the circumstances are. It depends on whether or not your vehicle is being attacked, whether or not you think you are being attacked, whether or not your wife and child’s in the car,” Kelly said. “You have to look at the totality of the circumstances, and that’s what we’re doing.”
What the bikers were doing was reacting to a wreck. Lien rear-ended one of them, and the New York City Police Department says at least one of the motorcyclists was at fault.
They charged Christopher Cruz with reckless endangerment and child endangerment for allegedly slowing down on purpose.
Police are looking at the video one of the bikers posted on YouTube of the wreck, chase and beginning of the alleged attack on Lien. He was pulled out of the SUV at 178th Street and Wadsworth Avenue, where he was beaten until he needed stitches.
Mieses’ mother and sister say he should pay.
“We don’t condone the violence. There was no need for it. But, he left,” said Dayana Mieses, Edwin Mieses’ sister. “Yeah, I’m glad they chased, they chased him down, they stopped him and now, they know who he is.”
Authorities say the driver of the SUV is cooperating. When asked if he should face any responsibility, the police commissioner said it’s under investigation.
