NYC teachers, parents ‘charter’ school march

New York City’s charter school supporters are expected to march Tuesday across the Brooklyn Bridge in light of mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio’s promise to force the schools to pay rent.

Thousands of parents, students and teachers will march across the Brooklyn Bridge on Tuesday morning to show support for New York City’s charter schools, which face the prospect of a less friendly mayor in Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.

Most of the city’s 183 charter schools get rent-free space in city school buildings, a deal that gives the publicly funded, privately run schools an unfair boost, critics say.

De Blasio has vowed to end the practice if elected mayor, but charter school leaders say that being forced to pay rent could put many of them out of business.
