NYPD Hispanic Society Calls For Latino Police Commissioner

The NYPD Hispanic Society says it’s time for a Latino police commissioner

The group is putting forward First Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro.

They say none of the names being tossed around for the next police commissioner are Latino, and they say that’s unfair in a police department made up of thousands of Latino officers.

“We don’t recommend Rafael Pineiro because he’s Latino. We recommend him because he has the credentials and the qualifications to lead the department,” said Detective Dennis Gonzalez, president of the NYPD Hispanic Society. “We challenge the next mayor to demonstrate the commitment to the Latino community and make history by appointing the first ever Hispanic police commissioner.”

Deputy Commissioner Rafael Pineiro graduated at the top of his class in June 1970. He most recently served as Chief of Personnel. He also earned a law degree from Brooklyn Law School.
