Off-Duty Officer Arraigned In Deadly Collision With SI Pedestrian

An off-duty city police officer was arraigned Friday on vehicular manslaughter and DWAI charges after fatally running down a pedestrian earlier in the morning.

Police say the officer, identified by sources as Joseph McLean, 29, struck and killed the 51-year-old man around 6:15 a.m. on Richmond Terrace.

Sources say the victim landed on the car and the officer just kept driving.

He then allegedly fled the scene but returned about a half an hour later.

The victim’s landlord — who owns the deli under his apartment — tells NY1 the victim had just bought a cup of coffee and was heading to work.

“Very sad, Very sad. I can’t believe it he’s my tenant, he’s a steady customer, every breakfast lunch and dinner, this is the only spot he comes to. It’s very very sad for him,” said the landlord.

Sources tell NY1 McLean did not take a breathalyzer at the scene but was visibly drunk.

Officials say he has been with the department since 2005 and finished his shift Thursday around 6 p.m.

Bail for McLean has been set at $ 50,000.

He is due back in court on October 9.
