Republicans in ruins

America’s least wanted.

America’s least wanted.

After a blistering public opinion poll, Republicans in Congress must finally get the message: The shutdown was a dead-end, and threats to blow through the debt limit were even worse.

The poll, by the Wall Street Journal and NBC, leaves no doubt: By a 22-point margin (53% to 31%), the public blames the GOP more than Obama. The Republican Party’s broader brand has sunk to just 24% approval, a record low. And 60% of those polled want to replace every single member of Congress, including their own.

Friday, congressional Republicans and Obama had fresh talks — with, both sides said, a more constructive tone than previously. An emerging deal could get the government up and running again and avert a debt ceiling standoff, with a window for both sides to then wrestle with the country’s broader fiscal mess.

Good. Annual deficits have been reined in of late — in large part because of automatic spending cuts that were drawn without thought and will, over time, do terrible damage to military readiness. And as things now stand, deficits will rise starting in 2016, and the national debt would reach epic proportions by 2038.

So, spend today to answer the crisis of unemployment — and make smart cuts tomorrow to the entitlement programs that are driving the debt sky-high.
