Sharpton Calls For Boycott Of Barney’s After Racial Profiling Allegations

The Rev. Al Sharpton is calling for a boycott of the department store Barney’s after allegations of racial profiling there.

Sharpton spoke Saturday at his National Action Network about two lawsuits filed by customers.

One is from 19-year-old Trayvon Christian, who claims he was unjustly questioned and detained by police after buying a belt from the store’s Madison Avenue location.

Another lawsuit, from 21-year-old Kayla Philips, says she was detained after buying an expensive designer bag.

In both cases, Barney’s allegedly told the shoppers their credit cards were fake.

Sharpton said that that’s unacceptable.

“There is an unholy agreement somewhere between these stores and elements of the NYPD,” Sharpton said. “We’ve gone from stop-and-frisk to shop-and-frisk, and we are not going to take it, no matter what you say.”

The store released a statement earlier this week saying it’s reviewing its practices and procedures with the help of a civil rights expert.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the police department is investigating.
