The United Federation of Teachers allegedly tried to hide identity of consulting firm.

THE CITY’S powerful teachers union is under fire from good-government groups for apparently trying to hide the identity of a consulting firm it was using to boost union-backed candidates.

Campaign finance records show the union this year paid $ 429,000 to “Strategic Consulting,” for campaign mailers supporting union-backed candidates.

That appears to be another name for the Advance Group, which was advising the campaigns of several UFT-backed City Council candidates.

The connection, first reported by Crain’s, could violate campaign finance rules since political action committees are not allowed to coordinate with campaigns.

“This is a disturbing end-run around the campaign finance laws,” steamed Common Cause.

The union said it used “firewalls” to stay within the law.
