Volunteers Distribute Fliers As Search For Missing Autistic Queens Teen Goes On

It’s been more than two weeks since Avonte Oquendo went missing, but the family of the 14-year-old teen isn’t giving up hope that he will be found.

Volunteers met up near Avonte’s Long Island City school Saturday to distribute flyers.

Many of the volunteers joined the search after seeing the stories on the news, having no connection to the Oquendo Family.

Last Friday night, authorities thought they found Avonte on a train in Far Rockaway, but that was a false alarm.

Avonte’s father, Daniel, says he hopes every day of the search is the last day.

“It’s bittersweet, though,” Daniel Oquendo said. “It’s good to see all the attention on him, but at the same time, he’s still, it’s over two weeks, so it’s tough. But it’s good to see how everybody’s pulling together at this time.”

Police released a photo of the shirt Avonte was wearing at the time of his disappearance. He was also wearing black jeans and black sneakers.

A reward of more than $ 70,000 is being offered for the teen’s safe return.

Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
