City, Nation Mark 50 Years Since JFK Assassination

New Yorkers are pausing today to remember President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated 50 years ago today in Dallas, Texas.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held this morning at Kennedy’s gravesite at Arlington National Ceremony.

A memorial service is also planned today in Dallas.

A moment of silence will be held at 12:30 p.m., the time that Kennedy was shot.

The nation’s 35th president was riding in a motorcade with his wife Jacqueline on November 22, 1963 when he was hit by gunfire in Dealey Plaza.

Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office after Kennedy died.

Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for killing Kennedy, but he was shot and killed by Jack Ruby two days later.

The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone, but conspiracy theorists have questioned the official story ever since.

President Barack Obama visited Kennedy’s gravesite on Wednesday.

The president has proclaimed today a Day of Remembrance in Kennedy’s honor and ordered all government buildings to lower their flags to half-staff.
