Council Hearing Held On Foam Container Ban

The City Council’s Sanitation Committee is holding a public hearing on a proposed foam container ban this afternoon.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg first introduced the idea during his State of the City address in January and a bill was introduced a few months later.

Supporters say a ban on non-recyclable polystyrene cups and containers will help the environment.

But opponents argue the ban will do little to reduce solid waste and cost restaurants and food vendors more to use paper and plastic packaging.
