A good Samaritan thwarted a sex assault in Queens early Friday, officials said.
Police said the suspect followed a 24-year-old woman after she stepped off a Q64 bus at the corner of 152nd St. and Melbourne Ave. in Kew Gardens at 5:30 a.m.
He then punched the woman in the head, and dragged her into bushes nearby, officials said. The attacker was ripping off the woman’s clothes when a stranger intervened.
“A good samaritan steps in and the assailant flees,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters Friday.
The assailant got away and was still at large as of Friday afternoon. Police described the suspect as a Hispanic man in his mid-20s, but a fuller description was not available.
The identity of the hero was not known.
Police ask anyone with information on the crime to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers tipline at 800-577-TIPS.
