Schumer Unhappy With Deal To Temporarily Limit Iran’s Nuclear Program

Sen. Charles Schumer isn’t happy with a deal to temporarily limit Iran’s nuclear program, saying that it doesn’t ask enough of Iran.

Six world powers, including the United States, brokered the agreement in Geneva, Switzerland early Sunday.

The deal calls for a six-month stop to the country’s nuclear development.

Some economic sanctions on Iran will be lifted in exchange.

In a press conference, Schumer said that the international community should have made Iran reduce its nuclear capabilities, not just freeze their progress.

He also said that he will seek to pass new sanctions when the Senate reconvenes in December.

“And I am worried, when the sanctions have been so effective, that by reducing them and not getting a proportionate reduction in Iranian nuclear weapon-making capability, we’re sending a signal to Iran that they can continue to go ahead,” Schumer said.

Schumer added that he does hope that the Obama administration can eventually reach its ultimate goal in the final deal of eliminating all of Iran’s nuclear weapons-making capability.
