Dozens of people were forced to evacuate when a fire ripped through a Manhattan apartment building earlier Sunday morning.
The fire broke out on the third floor shortly before 7 a.m. on West 138th Street in Hamilton Heights and quickly climbed up to the fifth floor.
The cold weather and windy conditions made it difficult for firefighters to put it out.
One person inside suffered minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.
Residents said that the speed of the fire was terrifying.
“It was, like, pretty instant, figuring out that the fire was going on and then everybody just leaving the building,” said resident Jason Belcher.
“Quite a few people devastated, you know, coming out in their pajamas, it’s like 20, 30 degrees out here, and it’s just really unfortunate,” said neighbor Nadia Iyageh.
One hundred and forty firefighters responded to the scene.
Two were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
