Bronx State Assemblyman Eric Stevenson leaves Manhattan Federal Court. Stevenson and several others are charged in connection with an alleged bribery scheme to sell legislation for cash to control the market for Bronx day care centers.

Breaking up is hard to do, at least with this judge.

State Assemblyman Eric Stevenson of the Bronx asked for new representation in his corruption case, claiming he no longer trusts court-appointed lawyer Andrew Patel.

But Manhattan Federal Judge William Pauley shot him down Monday.

“I don’t feel I’m getting appropriate representation,” said the Morrisiana Democrat.

The judge scoffed at that, suggesting that Patel has urged Stevenson to cop a plea.

“You’re not getting the advice you want to hear,” Pauley said. “If you don’t like the plea, go to trial.”

The judge told the defendant and lawyer to make up.

“I’m here to try cases,” Pauley said. “You two had better repair your relationship.”
