A church bus crash on a highway in Jefferson County, Tenn., killed at least eight people and injured up to 14 others Wednesday, local media report.


The bus’ left front tire burst about 2 p.m. heading east on Interstate 40 and it drifted into the median, causing it to collide with a tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet Tahoe, reported the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The tractor-trailer immediately caught fire and the bus overturned as dark clouds stretched high into sky.


The crash resulted in eight dead and 14 injured.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and blasted water to extinguish the blaze but smoke was still rising from the wreck hours later.

Among the dead were six bus passengers, the tractor-trailer’s driver and an SUV passenger, according to Dalya Qualls, an officer with the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security.


She told the Knoxville News Sentinel that the bus was carrying 18 people in total.

Ten of the crash victims were driven to hospitals while three were air-carried, authorities said.


The bus was carrying senior churchgoers from the Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville, N.C. to a religious event called the Fall Jubilee in Gatlinburg, Tenn., The Statesville Record & Landmark newspaper reported.


All lanes on the highway in Jefferson County were closed throughout the afternoon as emergency crews rushed to the scene, local media said.


The state’s department of transportation estimates that the highway will remain closed-off until about 9 p.m. tonight.
