LOS ANGELES — In an effort to finish off the Braves in Monday’s Game 4, the Dodgers announced about six hours before game time that ace Clayton Kershaw would start on short rest instead of Ricky Nolasco.

It’s a move that could have the Dodgers celebrating in front of their own fans or open Don Mattingly and club brass to serious second guessing. The Dodgers are up 2-1 in the best-of-five series.

Kershaw, the winner in Game 1 and a lock for the NL Cy Young Award, has never pitched on three days’ rest before. He threw 124 pitches in allowing one run and striking out 12 over seven innings in the opener in Atlanta Thursday.

If the Braves win Game 4, they would force an elimination game in the division series back in Atlanta on Wednesday. Zack Greinke, the Dodgers’ No. 2 starter, would start that game on regular rest.
