Mother Of ‘Baby Hope’ Discusses Unanswered Questions In Case

The mother of Anjelica Castillo, known to many as “Baby Hope,” opened her doors to NY1 Tuesday and discussed many of the unanswered questions in the case.

Margarita Castillo says Anjelica was taken away by her father and eventually left in the care of a relative, 52-year-old Conrado Juarez.

Juarez is the man charged with allegedly raping and suffocating Anjelica.

Officials found her body in a cooler along the Henry Hudson Parkway in 1991.

Juarez remains in custody after pleading not guilty at his arraignment last weekend.

When asked why she never called police when her daughter went missing, Margarita Castillo said through an interpreter, “Because of being dumb, ignorant, scared, to have to go to a police station and not knowing the language. We come from a town where there’s no justice, where they do whatever they want. We came to the States without knowing how things are done here.”

Margarita Castillo also said she made repeated attempts to locate the little girl and was fed wrong information about her whereabouts.

Anjelica’s mother described to NY1 the moment she found out that all hope was lost.

“When detectives came and showed me the pictures, just imagine, any hope I had died there that one day, my daughter could come up to me as an adult, and to be told that that was a child that got taken away from me,” she said through an interpreter.

Margarita Castillo said that after Anjelica and her father separated, they were never able to get the child back until it was too late.
