The MTA will consider subway trains that connect without interior doors, making it easier for riders to move from car to car in search of seats.

Train cars would be linked by accordion-style “gangways” similar to those on the 60-foot articulated buses the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has on some routes.

Subway trains without interior doors is one of many concepts in the authority’s “Twenty Year Capital Needs Assessment” report that staffers recommend be explored. There is no timetable or budget established for such a program.

“Subway cars with open gangways have the potential to increase train capacity and speed up station stops as people get on and off faster,” MTA spokesman Adam Lisberg said. “But like any new technology, we want to give it a rigorous analysis before seeing whether it could make sense in a subway system as old and complicated as New York’s.”
