School aide sprung from elevator duty

Fran Tortorici is free!

The veteran school aide, 89, no longer has to sit in a tiny elevator all day at the Manhattan Center of Science and Mathematics.

Principal David Jimenez sprang Tortorici from the dim lift as soon as he learned The Post had inquired about her new assignment.

Jimenez returned Tortorici to the main office, where she answers the switchboard phones among other duties with her co-workers, “the girls.”

“They’re so happy to see me back because I’m a big kidder. I like fooling around,” the elated senior said. “It’s like old times, like nothing ever happened.”

She never complained about being confined nearly five hours a day to the elevator, saying, “It’s a job and I’m lucky to have it.”

While school staffers blasted Jimenez for his callous treatment of Tortorici, he called her “one of the most respected members of our staff.”
