Schumer: Latest GOP Attempt To Reopen Parts Of Gov’t A Sham

President Barack Obama plans to meet with congressional leaders at the White House this afternoon in an effort to end the partial federal government shutdown which continues to be felt locally.

This comes after House Republicans introduced three bills on the floor yesterday that would have re-opened national parks and continued funding veteran’s programs.

Democrats are dismissing them, saying they are just a gimmick and are not real steps towards ending the shutdown.

“We can fund NIH. We can do it today if Senator Reid and President Obama would allow it but no, instead we’re told it’s my way or the highway and we actually like this shut down they’re saying to themselves because they think they’re winning politically,” said Sen. John Cornyn of Texas.

“As leader Reid said yesterday we’re not in 1984. Truth has some degree of credulity here. For my colleague from Texas to get up and say Harry Reid and Barack Obama open up the government? When his junior colleague led the charge to shut it down. When the cries of the Tea Party are shut it down. And we are desperately trying to keep it open? It makes no sense,” said Senator Charles Schumer.

Around 800,000 federal employees that have been deemed “nonessential” will have their paychecks deferred until the shutdown ends.

This is the first government shutdown in 17 years.
