Johns, Warhol pieces on block in Lautenberg collection

Christie’s auction house is planning to sell pieces from the art collection of the late U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

The auction house said Friday it would be holding a series of auctions this fall and next spring.

Lautenberg died in June at age 89.

The self-made millionaire was an avid collector of art work that Christie’s says “echoed his highly personal vision of America: patriotic, progressive and multifaceted.”

Christie’s says Lautenberg assembled a collection of some of the best post-war and contemporary artists and photographers, predominantly American.

Works being auctioned include those by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol. His collection also includes works by

French Modernist Fernand Léger, and mid-century photographer Robert Frank, and New Jersey native Alfred Stieglitz.
