Two city subway riders who are behind a catchy new Internet video are even getting some smiles from the conductors featured in them. NY1′s Jose Martinez filed the following report.
Straphangers Yosef Lerner and Rose Sacktor turned into subway celebrities this week after their “Subway Signs Experiment” went viral. The video shows them standing near the so-called zebra bars conductors have to point to after pulling into into a station with signs geared to get a reaction.
“The first thing that came to mind is, ‘You are dead sexy.’ Because who doesn’t want to acknowledge that they themselves are dead sexy?” Lerner said.
The pair came up with the idea after learning that conductors need to point to the zebra board to show a train is in the right spot.
“When we read about it, that’s sort of when it clicked. But before that, I just saw the conductors always in the middle of the train. It’s such a small, loud place that they’re in all the time, you should do something nice,” Sacktor said.
Most conductors point and grin, while some are baffled.
“That is so cute. That is the cutest thing,” said one conductor.
“I think the poor guy doesn’t have much of a life,” said another conductor.
The video’s online popularity has even given its creators a following in subway stations.
“It was adorable. It’s a nice New York thing, you know?” said one straphanger.
Even MTA officials were amused.
“I’m sure plenty of people have seen the conductors pointing at the boards over the years and wondered what that’s all about. We take this in the spirit that some good-hearted people wanted to honor the hard work that our conductors do every day around the clock,” said MTA Spokesman Adam Lisberg.
As for what’s been the funniest response from those who’ve seen the signs? Sacktor and Lerner say it was the time one conductor kindly disagreed with their “New York is the Greatest City in the World” sign and said she’d rather move to Chicago.
