Walmart starts holiday deals already

Walmart.com has begun posting holiday deals the day after Halloween! This is a screen shot from Nov. 1, 2013.

Among the deals, Walmart.com is offering a $ 49 10-inch XELIO tablet, a JVC 42-inch LED TV for $ 300 and an HP 14-inch laptop for $ 299.

Halloween leftovers were barely a day old when consumers were given a surprise treat: early Black Friday deals, courtesy of Walmart.

The world’s biggest retailer jumped the gate on its holiday bargains this year, posting a slew of savings on its website Friday — a month before the shopping season officially gets into full swing the day after Thanksgiving.

With Turkey Day falling on Nov. 28 this year, there are six less days of shopping until Christmas compared to last year, prompting Walmart to get a head start on the competition by luring consumers ahead of the pack.

“The Black Friday creep is certainly underway earlier than ever, and that’s a good thing for shoppers,” said Mark LoCastro, spokesman and shopping expert for deals and coupons site dealnews.com.

In addition to Walmart’s early sale, “other retailers’ holiday ads have already been coming out, and that helps consumers who can then go out with a shopping list and know how much things’ll cost at certain stores by scanning ads and seeing what’s already out there,” LoCastro said.

Besides the decrease in shopping days this season, retailers are also wary that consumers are primed to spend a little less than in Christmases past.

A slow economy, payroll tax increases, the partial government shutdown last month and waning consumer confidence has recently led retail-sales research firms, including ShopperTrak, to predict a less-than-Merry Christmas when it comes to the bottom line.

As a result, retail spending expert Trae Bodge of RetailMeNot.com expects this to be one of the more deeply-discounted holiday shopping seasons in recent years, especially if other stores follow Walmart’s lead.

“I think we’ll see the same sort of behavior from other merchants who’ll be jumping on the bandwagon and offering deep deals to get consumers excited,” Bodge said.

Among the early deals being offered by Walmart are a JVC 42-inch LED TV for $ 300, originally $ 500; a 10-inch XELIO tablet for $ 49 that’s more than 50% off; and an HP Pavilion 14-inch Sleekbook laptop for $ 299, originally $ 488.

Walmart said those are the lowest prices it has ever offered in those categories.
