The Port Authority is stepping up security at airports and checkpoints locally after a gunman opened fire inside a busy terminal Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport.
California authorities say a Transportation Security Administration agent was killed and six other people wounded after a New Jersey man wearing fatigues opened fire inside LAX shortly after 9:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Officials tell the Associated Press that Paul Ciancia, 23, was also carrying a bag that had a note saying he wanted to “Kill TSA and pigs”.
“Pulled a assault riffle out of a bag and began to open fire in the terminal. He proceeded up into the screening area where TSA screeners are and continued shooting and went passed the screeners and into the airport itself,” said LAX Police Chief Patrick Gannon.
Police were able to capture the suspect after a brief shootout.
He is believed to have been acting alone.
Flights bound for Los Angeles that had not yet taken off were held at their gates.
Hundreds of people had to be evacuated.
Three JetBlue flights in the air were diverted to other airports.
The Port Authority’s chief security officer said while they have stepped up patrols at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark it should not impact flight operations.
Passengers should still check with their individual carriers for any delays.
