Fisherman hooks drowning man, saving him

A senior citizen who fell into Jamaica Bay Saturday was rescued by a fisherman who made the catch of his life — hooking the man’s sweatshirt and holding his head above water until help arrived.

The amazing drama took place at Brooklyn’s Canarsie pier around 12:45 p.m. when the man, who had been sitting on a rail, accidentally fell into the water.

The fisherman hooked the man and managed to keep him from going under for about seven minutes until police and fire rescuers arrived on the scene.

Neither man’s name was immediately released.

The man in the water was unconscious when rescuers arrived, authorities said.

Detective Eric Tobkes held a mask over his nose and mouth.

“He had a very weak pulse. He wasn’t breathing,’’ the detective said.

“I just did rescue breathing. [Then] his tongue started moving and he was exhaling.”

Other cops participating in the rescue were Detective Eric Tobkes and Officer Eric Sonderman.

“It’s a good feeling to know you helped save somebody’s life,’’ Tobkes said.

The officers put him in an FDNY boat and he was taken to Brookdale Hospital.
