A medical facility may remain in brownstone Brooklyn in place of financially troubled Long Island College Hospital, but it may stand in the shadow of two 50-story residential towers, it was reported Friday.
The winning bidder for the Cobble Hill site, Brooklyn Health Partners, is planning to erect a pair of residential buildings on top of the hospital it has promised to build, according to Crain’s New York.
Details of the residential part of the plan, which would be built atop a full-service hospital with 300 to 400 beds, were mentioned in emails obtained by Crain’s. In one, a financial advisor involved in the bid wrote about a condo tower of 40-50 stories; 20% of the units would be affordable.
That would be followed by a similarly-sized building with rental apartments, 40% of which would be affordable.
“Did you notice I said 40%?” Crain’s quoted the broker asking Brooklyn Health Partners’ CEO. “We are spoon-feeding our deal to (Mayor) de Blasio.”
Brooklyn Health Partners’ plans would need city approval. The site’s would-be developers will pay the State College of New York, which owns the site, $ 250 million.
