All types of talent were on display in Harlem today as the Apollo Theatre held audition’s for the 80th season of amateur night. NY1′s Bree Driscoll filed the following report.
From Michael to prince, the traditional to modern—it all crossed the audition stage of the Apollo Theatre Saturday.
“It makes me like I am alive. It makes me feel like my spirit is up. I am so excited. I can’t wait to get in and show them what I have,” one performer said.
“It felt like an opportunity that I was born to take on,” another said.
Hundreds of people waited in line, some over night, to get their chance to perform.
“We’ve be here for like 5 o’clock in the morning all the way until now,” said another performer.
“It is very tiring. I have been here since early in the morning just trying to get a decent spot. Like I said, it is a very tiring thing, but it is worth it,” another performer said.
This is the 80th season of amateur night. Producers attribute its longevity to giving performers their chance at stardom.
Marion Caffey is one of the people who chooses the acts.
“The unyielding desire for people to be stars and want to own the spotlight,” Caffey said.
“No matter what you do, I think you should try to be your best and work on the craft of it.”
Caffey described one performer’s act.
“She danced a little bit to an old school beat she flipped off her shoes and did a somersault. I am not sure what that is but she got up and stood in line to do it,” he said.
Now it becomes the waiting game as contestants wait to see if they made the cut—but even if you didn’t get a chance to audition, there is still an opportunity. Producers say they have chosen several acts from online submissions.
