Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign an executive order Tuesday that would significantly expand the city’s living wage law.
The order will cover thousands of previously exempt workers.
It will also raise the definition of a living wage to $ 13.13 an hour for workers who do not receive benefits.
The order was first reported by the New York Times.
Under it, the living wage law will cover employees of commercial tenants in buildings that receive more than a million dollars in city subsidies.
The mayor is working on a long-term goal of matching the city’s minimum wage to the living wage, but that would require a change in state law.
The city estimates that more than 4,000 workers who will now be covered by the law work in retail or fast food.
Their annual income is expected to increase by about $ 10,000.
