Cuomo Arrives in Afghanistan on Unannounced Governors Trip

Amid increased security due to tensions abroad, Governor Andrew Cuomo has made a surprise trip to Afghanistan with the Department of Defense and a delegation of governors.

Cuomo first stopped at a medical center in Germany to meet with wounded soldiers and hospital staff before heading to Afghanistan.

He’s being joined by the governors of Tennessee, Nevada and Missouri on the trip, which is sponsored by the Department of Defense.

Cuomo’s office says they couldn’t publicly announce his travel plans in advance because of security concerns.

The governor says he’s in Afghanistan to meet with soldiers and to receive counter-terrorism information.

Cuomo tweeted: “I received a series of briefings from @DeptofDefense officials on anti-terrorism issues & evolving global threats that affect NY’s security.”

About 270 members of the New York National Guard and 900 Soldiers based in New York have been deployed to Afghanistan.
