Study: Tourist-Only Fare on Staten Island Ferry Would Generate Millions

A new study finds creating a tourist-only fare on the Staten Island Ferry could generate millions of dollars for the city.

The report was conducted by the Independent Budget Office at the request of borough president James Oddo.

It finds that a $ 4 tourist fee would generate nearly $ 2.5 million a year.

City residents who live outside Staten Island would use MetroCards.

Those who live in the borough, and even those who just work there, would not be charged.

The city also considered the impact development on Staten Island’s North Shore may have.

A giant ferris wheel and outlet mall are slated to open in 2016.

Oddo says he is not pushing for this to actually happen but just wanted to analyze the potential benefits of such a measure.
