Street Closures in Effect for UN General Assembly

Drivers can expect major traffic headaches on Manhattan’s East Side this week as dignitaries from around the world gather for the 69th United Nations General Assembly.

The Assembly officially opens tomorrow, though there are some high-level meetings being held today.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is set to speak at the UN’s Climate Summit tomorrow morning.

President Barack Obama is expected to address the General Assembly on Wednesday.

As for traffic around the UN, there are a number of street closures and changes to be aware of this week.

From now until Saturday, First Avenue will be closed from 42nd Street to 48th Street, though the tunnel underpass will remain open to passenger cars; 44th Street, 45th Street and 46th Street will all be closed between First and Second avenues.

Starting tomorrow, police will close 49th Street from Third Avenue to Lexington Avenue.

That closure also lasts through Saturday.

Each day around 5 a.m., 42nd Street will be closed from the FDR Drive to Second Avenue, along with the 42nd Street entrance and exit ramps of the drive.

Those areas will reopen after each day’s session ends.

And from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m. Thursday, 49th and 50th Streets will be closed between Lexington and Park Avenues.
