The family of a biker injured in last weekend’s violent road rage accident on the West Side Highway spoke out Friday on the same day that another motorcyclist turned himself in to police. NY1 criminal justice reporter Dean Meminger filed the following report.
Its windows broken windows and bumpers damaged, the Range Rover involved in last Sunday’s road rage incident with dozens of motorcycle riders was brought to the 33rd precinct house Friday.
Also brought there: a green motorcycle, as part of the investigation being done by detectives.
Sources say rider Robert Simms turned himself in to be questioned by police. He was caught on video trying to yank the SUV door open while it was stopped on the West Side Highway during last weekend’s altercation.
Meanwhile, biker Edwin Jay Mieses remains in critical conditional after being run over by the SUV.
“I love him so much,” his girlfriend, Dayana Mejia, told reporters. “It tears me up that anyone could think that Edwin in any way deserves what happened to him.”
Mieses’ family members have hired high-powered attorney Gloria Allred to represent him. They say Mieses is not a thug or a part of a gang as some have suggested.
Allred says Mieses was off of his bike, trying to get traffic moving when he was run over.
“He was clearly an innocent victim, just standing there trying to get others to just move on and diffuse the situation,” Allred said. “The SUV comes and hits him when his back is turned.”
“Emotions got the best of several people last Sunday,” said Mieses’ father, Edwin Mieses, Sr. “The driver of that SUV is eventually going to have to face what he did.”
The family wouldn’t address questions about Mieses not having a license – but Allred said he loved to ride like any other motorcycle enthusiast.
“There are people who ride motorcycles who are lawyers and judges and bankers and police officers,” Allred said.
In fact sources tell NY1 that several law enforcement officers from around the tri-state area took part in Sunday’s overall motorcycle gathering. The sources say an NYPD officer has been placed on modified duty as Internal Affairs investigates what he knows about the altercation on the West Side Highway.
