A Brooklyn mother today fell ill and died in bed, where she rolled over and accidentally killed her newborn baby, officials said.
Marjorie Lyons, 34, was found dead in her Brownsville apartment, along with body of her 11-day-old son, Preston Alexander.
Lyons brother, Jerome, who lives downstairs, made the tragic discovery shortly after 10 a.m. when he came in to check on the family.
Lyons is also the mother of twin 6-year-old girls, and the brother became concerned because he didn’t see them leave for school.
When he got inside, he said found his sister’s body cold, and the baby laying under her, turning purple.
“She looked like she just laid back to take a little rest from the medication, which she was complaining made her drowsy,” Marjorie’s father Douglas Lyons, 52, said. “She was taking pain medication for the C-section.
“I spoke to her Sunday night. We came down to see the baby. She was saying she had a slight fever. And she did go to the hospital this week for that slight fever.
“I think it was oxycodone for pain. She said the medication was making her too drowsy. That was her complaint. It subsided the pain but it was making her a lot drowsy.
“It’s something I’m going to try to look into. Maybe ask if she took too much or not.”
Lyons said the family is struggling to figure out how to break the news to the girls.
“We just tell them that she’s sick,” Lyons said. “They keep coming back and saying, `Why are we taking so long to take her to the doctor it mommy is sick?’
“We’re just saying that we have to through certain procedures first, but mommy’ll soon go to the hospital. They want mommy to go to the hospital so she can go get better and come back home.”
