Sanitation Department garbage trucks.
A city sanitation driver suffered a life-threatening injury in a freak accident Friday — he was run over by the garbage truck he had been driving, officials said.
The 57-year-old worker was driving the truck near the corner of Dyre Ave. and Light St. in Edenwald at about 11:15 p.m. when the truck collided with a pillar for an elevated train line, police sources said.
The impact of the collision caused the driver to be thrown from the truck’s cab, the sources said. It was not clear if the truck’s driver’s-side door was open at the time. The driver landed on the road, underneath the vehicle, which kept on rolling, striking him as he lay in its path.
Paramedics rushed the worker to Jacobi Medical Center with a life-threatening leg injury, sources said. Doctors listed him in critical condition. His name was not immediately released.
